Umuahia - The Abia Government has given two-week ultimatum to landlords in Umuahia to shut down improvised shops attached to residential houses or risk sanctions.

The government gave the ultimatum in a
statement made available by Charles Ajunwa, the Chief Press Secretary to governor Theodore Orji.

The government expressed concern over what it described as "the current trend in Umuahia and environs where hitherto residential buildings have been converted to shops and trading places''. The government said that conversion of residential buildings to shops and market places was a violation of the law.

It warned that the task force on environmental and allied matters would commence demolition of such buildings at the end of the ultimatum if the landlords failed to restore affected houses to their original plans.
