An Ikeja Magistrate Court, yesterday, ordered that a
55- old woman, Rose Nwachuwku be remanded in
police custody for allegedly running an unlawful
orphanage home.
Magistrate Mrs Eniola Fabamwo, ordered that she
should be remanded till Monday when the case will
be heard by the appropriate court.
The defendant who was
arraigned before
Magistrate Fabamwo, is
facing a single charge of
unlawful
orphanage,preferred
against her by the Police.
The Police prosecutor, ASP
Barth Nwokoye, said that
Nwachuwku committed the
alleged offence between
January 2011 and August
17, 2013 at 30/32, Prince
Adebambo street, in
Egbeda area of Lagos.
He told the court that the defendant being a person
that was not authorised by the law to run an
orphanage home, unlawfully acquired and had in her
possession, 27 children of different ages.
According to the prosecutor, the offence committed
is punishable under section 183 of the child rights
law of Lagos Nigeria 2007.
However, when the charge was read to the
defendant, she pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Magistrate ordered that she be remanded in
police custody until August 26,2013, for the
appropriate court to handle it.
