The Nigerian music industry has been plagued with mass record label exit. Everyday we here of an artiste leaving their labels or falling out of favour with their boss.

Early last year, Wande Coal ended his long time relationship with Don Jazzy and Mavin Records just asJesse Jagz left Chocolate City. Artistes like Vector,Brymo and many others had a long run with their labels in court.

With the mass exit, one is bound to ask what exactly is chasing them and causing all the chaos. The Nigerian music industry lacks the structure that can conveniently address all the issues that affects both artistes and managers.

Most record deals are oral without any legal contract. Most times responsibilities are not spelt out. Record label contracts entails a lot, most contracts requires entertainment lawyers to dissect and explain to both parties for better working conditions but most artistes out of desperation, do not inquire about the terms and conditions before signing.

After signing the contracts, regrets and dissatisfaction sets in and most artistes start acting strange and looking for the easy way out. Some labels also fail in the area of their promises to the artiste and at other times, either the record label owners or the artiste become too greedy with too much expectations which becomes a reason to leave especially when there is no legally binding contract
