The Underberg-Himeville community has reacted with anger to the weekend murder of a man farm-sitting in the area.

It was the second farm murder in the area in weeks.

Retired farmer Ian Fellowes, 71, was shot three times by men who broke in at Ringstead farm just before midnight on Saturday. They stole a car, which they rolled near the Bulwer area, and then escaped on foot.

Himeville police confirmed on Sunday night that one man had been arrested, but could not provide details. A community member said a stolen firearm had been recovered.

It was not clear on Sunday how many people were involved in the attack, whose gun was used and what was stolen aside from the car.

'We are tired of these Satans'

The attack comes barely weeks after farmer Dan Knight, 56, was attacked at his farm Outlook at Himeville, near Underberg.

Farmers in the area said they have had enough of the attacks, and vowed to catch Fellowes's killers.

"We will catch these people. We are tired of these Satans," said a relative of Fellowes, who would not be named.

He said Fellowes, who is survived by his wife and two children, had been a cattle and sheep farmer in the Swartberg area and was retired.

"He moved to Underberg about 10 years ago and had been farm-sitting for a while. He was a good man," he said.

John Pearce of the Underberg-Himeville community watch said locals were angry about the killings. He warned that reckless political speeches about farmers and white people were exacerbating the situation.

Koos Marais of Kwanalu said they were shocked at yet another farm killing. "We are most concerned that life means so little."

Marais said farmers should employ every security measure available to keep themselves safe.

Police spokesperson Thulani Zwane said a case of murder and house robbery was being investigated.
